  • Plain Language Summary: Why landowners choose to restore Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.
Publicado em 27 de Novembro de 2024.

Forest restoration may help achieve globally important biodiversity, climate, and human well-being goals. Governments and other actors worldwide have committed to scaling forest restoration, including within the United National Global Biodiversity Framework. Yet, progress towards these goals has been slow.
Part of the problem is that it is unclear why some landowners choose to restore forests while others do not. Understanding these drivers may help design more effective and socially equitable restoration scaling strategies. Our research investigates the factors influencing landowners’ decisions to engage in forest restoration in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, a critical region for global biodiversity.
We analysed data from 222,000 private properties to understand what motivates landowners to restore forests. Our findings show that landowners with large properties and high cattle densities are more likely to engage in restoration. Properties with water bodies or near urban areas are also more likely to be restored. On the other hand, properties in remote, rugged, less populated, and poorer regions are less likely to be restored.
These patterns suggest that landowners are influenced by a combination of economic incentives, legal requirements, and support from restoration organizations. Larger landowners, who may have more resources and face greater pressure to comply with environmental laws, are more likely to engage in restoration. However, smaller landowners and those in poorer areas risk being marginalised from the Atlantic Forest restoration agenda, highlighting the need for more inclusive and equitable restoration strategies.
Understanding these motivations can help guide future restoration scaling strategies, ensuring they are tailored to meet the needs of different landowner groups. Doing so may help accelerate progress toward the ambitious goal of restoring Brazil’s Atlantic Forest and its contribution to global climate, biodiversity, and human well-being targets.
